AbergavennyAbergavenny is a market town in the north of Monmouthshire, fifteen miles west of Monmouth and six miles from the border with Herefordshire. This was once the site of a Roman fort, Gobannium, and later a mediæval walled town, and still contains the remains of a stone castle built soon after the Norman conquest. Abergavenny is just south of the Black Mountains and it is almost surrounded by two mountains – the Blorenge at 1,834 feet and the Sugar Loaf at 1,955 feet, and a ring of five hills. The Offa's Dyke Path passes close by and the Marches Way, The Beacons Way and Usk Valley Walk all pass through the town. (Read more) |
