Stow Bridge or Stowbridge is a small village in north-western Norfolk, in the drained fenland. It lies 2 miles north of Downham Market and barely that from the A10 to the east, the main north-south artery road of these lands.
The village is on the River Great Ouse and the great drainage and navigation channel running parallel to it, and takes its name from the bridge over the river. The village is split in two by the river and the channel, which are close and bridged here. Running along the edge of the channel here too is the main rail line from the south to King's Lynn. At one time Stowbridge had its own station on the line, long since closed but whose remais can be seen.
Churches
The parish church (Church of England) is St Peter's. It was built in 1910 and stands at the edge of the western half of the village, across the bridge on the road towards Outwell. A charming and slightly eccentric little church, it stands shaded by trees. A crenelated tower belies the church's small size. Inside, the dark timbers evoke the atmosphere of the devoted village chapel which it is.
Stowbridge Methodist Church is remarkably similar in structure to St Peter's and serves a most active congregation.
