Sterneck Island is an island in Hughes Bay lying between Cierva Point and Charles Point on the Danco Coast of Graham Land in the British Antarctic Territory.
The island forms part of the 'Cierva Point and offshore islands Important Bird Area' and 'Antarctic Specially Protected Area 134'.[1]
The island was charted on 24 January 1898 by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, who took it to be a cape and named it Cap von Sterneck after Gen. R. von Sterneck, of Vienna, who designed the pendulum apparatus used by the expedition. The name of von Sterneck was also applied incorrectly to Cape Herschel. The feature was charted as an island by a Chilean expedition in 1947 (who called Isla Telegrafista Rivera after Carlos Rivera, a telegraphist on the expedition.
The island was photographed from the air by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition of 1956-57. Following study of the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition air photographs, the island was identified as the feature originally named by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition and the original name, in the form 'Sterneck Island', was therefore applied.
