Stancomb Cove

Stancomb Cove is a bay on the west side of Telefon Bay, north-east of Cross Hill in the north-west part of Port Foster, within Deception Island in the South Shetland Islands, part of the British Antarctic Territory.

The cove is a recent feature: it was formed as the result of volcanic eruptions on the island in December 1967, February 1969 and August 1970.

Surveys

The cove was surveyed from HMS Endurance, part of a wider survey of Port Foster, in January 1988 and named after the survey boat Stancomb-Wills used in the survey. (The boat in turn was named after Shackleton's boat of the same name, one of three carried away from the wreck of his ship Endurance. Shackleton named his boat after the redoubtable Janet Stancomb-Wills, a sponsor of his expedition.)
