Snittlegarth is a tiny hamlet in Cumberland, on the edge of the Lake District, north of Binsey, a hill of 1,467 feet. According to the 2001 census, Snittlegarth and neighbouring Bewaldreth, the nearest village, to the south-west, had together a population of just 40 and at the 2011 Census it was measured that the population was still less than 100, though by that time the villages were not separately enumerated.
According to Bulmer's History & Directory of Cumberland (1901), "Snittlegarth ... is supposed to have been formerly a village of considerable magnitude. The word "Snittlegarth" is thought to signify an enclosure."[1]
