Smithfield is a village located in the parish of Kirklinton approximately eight miles north of Carlisle in northernmost Cumberland, north of Hadrian's Wall. It is a little place with an estimated population of around 250.
The main road through the village is the A6071 which runs between the two market towns of Longtown and Brampton, Smithfield sitting half way between them, four and six miles south-east and north-west of them respectively. The Dumfriesshire border is six miles to the north-west, beyond Longtown.
Scaleby is to the south and Kirklinton to the north.
Smithfield can be described as a commuter village with the majority of the adult population working in Carlisle.
