Sky-Hi Nunataks
Sky-Hi Nunataks is a group of nunataks in Palmer Land, within the British Antarctic Territory, at 74°52’1"S, 71°30’0"W. A "nunatak" is an exposed, rocky projection or ridge out of an ice field or glacier.
This group of nunataks is 8 nautical miles long, found 11 nautical miles east of the Grossman Nunataks and northeast of the Merrick Mountains and extend from Doppler Nunatak in the west to Arnoldy Nunatak in the east and including Mount Mende, Mount Lanzerotti, Mount Carrara, and Mount Cahill.
The Sky-Hi Nunataks were first seen and photographed from the air by an American research expedition, the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition of 1947-48. The name derives from the United States Antarctic research programme "Sky-Hi", send out to make measurements of the Earth's magnetic field and of the ionosphere, and which in 1961 established "Camp Sky-Hi" in Ellsworth Land for that purpose.
The British Antarctic Survey had a field camp and weather station at the Sky-Hi Nanutaks until Sky Blu became fully operational in the 1997-98 field season. The old field camp at Sky-Hi Nunataks was abandoned soon after this, and the weather station was removed in November 2004.
