Seamer-in-Cleveland, otherwise known just as Seamer, is a village in the Yorkshire of Yorkshire, three miles due south of Middlesbrough town centre and two miles north-west of Stokesley.[1]
The 2011 Census recorded the population of the village as 566.
The name of the village is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Semer(s),[2] with later mediæval attestations including Samara.[3] The first element is Old English sæ meaning 'sea' or in this context 'lake'; the spelling of the second element suggests variation between Old English mere 'sea', Old English mersc 'marsh', and Old Norse marr 'lake, sea, pool'. The dominant meaning of the name therefore seems to have been 'lake by the sea'.[4]
This rural village supports a small farming community.
Churches
- Church of England: St Martin's[5]
- Methodist: Seamer Methodist Chapel[6]
St Martin's is an 1822 rebuild of a mediæval church, which was located in the same place. It still retains some 14th-century stained glass and is now grade II listed.[7]
About the village

At the heart of the village is the village green, with a duck pond.[9]
