Data

Round Island is a small, uninhabited island which is the northernmost point of the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall, a 131-foot mass of granite, bare until Trinity House built a lighthouse here.

On the island stands a lighthouse: Round Island Lighthouse, built in 1887 by William Tregarthen Douglass and automated in 1987. The top of the island forms the platform on which Trinity House built a lighthouse and dwellings in 1887 under conditions of extreme difficulty. The sheer rock face posed an almost insurmountable challenge in the unloading of building materials, but Trinity House persisted and succeeded in creating a lighthouse 62 feet high, with a current intensity of 340,000 candela and range of 27½ miles.
