The River Fleet

The River Fleet is a minor river in the south-east of Sutherland. It enters the sea in Loch Fleet, a wide and almost enclosed tidal basin. The river rises in the low hills of south-eastern Sutherland at about 755 feet above sea level and runs eastwards, carving a valley known as Strath Fleet. At Pittentrail and Rogart the valley broadens and the river continues east-south-east to the sea.

The A9 coast road crosses the Fleet on an embankment known as "the Mound", constructed by Thomas Telford; the Mound has the effect of dividing Loch Fleet so that behind the Mound is a non-tidal wetland stretch of the river, some time known as "Upper Loch Fleet". Past the Mound the river enters the basin of Loch Fleet, whence its waters reach the sea.
