Over Dinsdale is a small village in the North Riding of Yorkshire, in a narrow-necked tongue of land caught in a loop in the River Tees (which forms Yorkshire's border with County Durham), three and a half miles south-west of Darlington, if somewhat further by road, but barely over a mile from the end of the runway of Durham Tees Valley Airport, across the river to the north-east.
The population of the village (including Girsby) taken at the 2011 census was just 151.
The village straddles an ancient Roman road on the border with County Durham. Over Dinsdale is located on a peninsula in the River Tees, approximately six miles from Darlington and eight and a half miles from Yarm. The Teesdale Way passes through the village.
Historically the village was a township in the ancient parish of Sockburn, a parish divided by the River Tees between the North Riding of Yorkshire (which included Over Dinsdale) and County Durham (which included the township of Sockburn).[1] Over Dinsdale became a separate civil parish in 1866.[2]
The neighbouring village of Low Dinsdale is across the river in County Durham.
