Information |
The Old East End School stands in East End on Anguilla, and is today in the care of the Anguilla National Trust.
The school was built in 1917, and was at that time Anguilla’s first public primary school. It consists of a single, unpartitioned 50-foot by 30-foot classroom, built on wooden piles, using timber and shingles carried from St Kitts.
For 55 years, it served as a school and a hub for community life. The school closed in 1974, and the building fell into disrepair.
Nevertheless, the old school proved a sturdier construction than its successor: it has survived many hurricanes and when the new school was destroyed by Hurricane Luis in 1995 when Luis severely damaged the new primary school, the Old East End School accommodated the classes until the later one was restored.
In 2005 the school building was acquired by the Anguilla National Trust. Since then it has been restored after strenuous fundraising, which restoration was completed in 2015. It is available for rent.
