News Wood

News Wood spreads across the western, lower slopes of the Herefordshire Beacon, Millennium Hill, Hangmans Hill and Swinyard Hill, in a southerly part of the chain of the Malvern Hills. Lying on the west side of the hills, the wood is within Herefordshire.

The wood is much frequented by walkers descending from or ascending the hills, or just enjoying the countryside. In the summer the ground is filled with bluebells and wild wood garlic, Allium ursinum, and the latter fills the wood with its distinct aroma.

Miscellany

The wood contains one of the many wells of the Malverns, Walm Well, now feeding a farm reservoir. There is also the an earthwork from a minor hill fort, echoing the vast hill fort overspreading the Herefordshire Beacon above.

As a Designated Local Geological Sites, the wood contains an example of exposed Silurian rock of the Much Wenlock Formation.[1]
