Nelly Point
Nelly Point is an ice free headland on the eastern side of Elephant Island in the South Shetland Islands of the British Antarctic Territory. It is found between Muckle Bluff and Walker Point.
This point is named from the presence here of Macronectes giganteus, the southern giant petrel or 'Nelly'.
East of Nelly Point Important Bird Area
To the east of the point is an area known as the East of Nelly Point Important Bird Area, and more recently as Point W of Walker Point: this is an 86½-acre, ice-free tract of land along Elephant Island's south-eastern coast. It has been referred to unofficially as 'Chinstrap Camp'.
The site has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International because it supports a large breeding colony of about 24,000 pairs of chinstrap penguins.[1]
