Nansen Island lies in the outer part of Wilhelmina Bay, which indents the Danco Coast of Graham Land in the British Antarctic Territory.
The island was roughly charted by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, 24 January 1898 together with Enterprise Island, charting the two as one island, which they called Île Nansen after Dr Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930), the great Norwegian Arctic explorer and oceanographer.
The name late appears as 'Nansen Island' on a British chart. The two islands were recharted as separate features by the British Antarctic Expedition of 1920-1922. The name 'South Nansen' appears too, referring to the present feature. The name 'Nansen Islands' has appeared for Nanasen and Enterprise Islands.
The island was photographed from the air by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition of 1956-1957.
