The mountain is probably an extinct volcano.
Surveys and name
The mountain was surveyed as part of a survey of the island in 1962 and in 1964, from HMS Protector.
The mountain was given the name 'Mount Oceanite' in 1974 by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee, and refers to the oceanite lavas present in this area, which occur nowhere else in the South Sandwich Islands. (An earlier name appearing on an Argentine map is Monte Allen, in association with Allen Point – the island's southern headland.)
