Mount Elder is a 3,084-foot mountain lying between Endurance Glacier and Mount Pendragon on in the south-west of Elephant Island, in the South Shetland Islands of the British Antarctic Territory. The mountain was surveyed and climbed by the Joint Services Expedition to Elephant Island in December 1970, called descriptively 'Misty Mountain'.
The mountain was later named for Captain John P. Elder of the Royal Engineers, Surveyor of the U.K. Joint Services Expedition to Elephant Island in 1970–71.
Important Bird Area
A 516-acres tract of ice-free land two and a half miles east of the mountain, extending for two and a half miles along the shoreline, has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International because it supports a large breeding colony of about 14,000 pairs of chinstrap penguins.[1]
