Mortimer West End is a tiny village in northern Hampshire, within the northern-most tongue of the county, south-west of its parent village, Mortimer, which is across the border in Berkshire. The border of Berkshire runs through the woods to the west and north of Mortimer West End and through the edge of Mortimer itself to the east.
History
The village forms part of the ancient parish of Stratfield Mortimer, which is mostly in Berkshire). It became an independent ecclesiastical parish in 1870, its parish church, St Saviour, having been built in 1854.[1]
About the village
There is one public house in the village, the Red Lion, which is now an Italian Gastropub.
The village is very close to the site of Calleva Atrebatum, a Roman city whose walls stil lstand tall, which mostly lies in the parish of Silchester. The remains of the town's amphitheatre, however, lie within Mortimer West End, and the Roman road running from Silchester northwards through the village can still be made out in parts. A short stretch of Roman road is still in use in the hamlet of Aldermaston Soke.
