Midlem is a little village in the north of Roxburghshire, three miles east of Selkirk. The village is along the B6453 road and within the Parish of Bowden
Once this village was a centre for linen manufacture. Today it is a peaceful village noted for its many traditional, vernacular style buildings gathered around the large village green. The village is a conservation area.[1]
Midlem has a distinct layout with a track running almost around the entire village allowing access to the rear of each property and enclosing the long rig gardens
The Midlem Burn runs along the south edge of the village and the whole is on a southward slope above the valley of the Ale Water. About 44 houses and cottages are set around the village green with most houses opening on to the perimeter road.
To the south there is a magnificent view over farmland and woodland to the Cheviot Hills.
A blacksmith's shop stands on the village green, and there is an active village hall.
