Matthews Island is one of the Robertson Islands, a group of small islands off Coronation Island in the South Orkney Islands of the British Antarctic Territory. It is separated from the south-east point of Coronation Island by The Divide.

Matthews was formerly charted as part of Coronation Island (BA chart 1775, 1956); surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey from Signy in January 1957, when its insularity was established; named after Dr Drummond Hoyle Matthews (1931-1997), the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey geologist, Signy, 1956-57; Reader in Marine Geology, Cambridge University, from 1971.
