Lowther is a small village standing between the River Lowther to the west and the River Leith to the east, in Westmorland. It is separated from the Leith by the A6 road, the M6 motorway and the railway line, and from the Lowther by Lowther Park: the parkland of Lowther Castle.
The village gives its name to a wider parish of some 495 souls, incorporating Lowther itself, Newtown (alias Lowther Newtown), Hackthorpe, Whale and Melkinthorpe. A large part of the parish is within the Lake District National Park.
Most of the land in the parish belongs to the Earls of Lonsdale and his family trusts. The family seat of the Lowthers was formerly Lowther Castle which is now a ruin but set in its still spectacular parkland.
Hackthorpe, barely separated from Lowther to the south-east once had its own magistrates court, which is now part of the village's pub.
