On the Heritage Trail

The Heritage Trail is a walking trail crossing the Isle of Man from coast to coast, from Douglas to Peel running for ten miles over the waist of the island. The trail follows the old Douglas to Peel railway line.

At the Douglas end, the route starts at Quarter Bridge, and follows the disused Douglas to Peel Steam Railway line until Braddan Bridge. The trail then runs along the railway line beside the River Dhoo, and over the island.

The route crosses an easy path over the island, not amongst the greatest hills, and reaches it maximum height at just 180 feet above sea level.

Descending towards the west coast, the trail comes to St John's, close to Tynwald Hill, then on towards Peel the trail passes the golf course then down to the town itself to finish at the House of Manannan (which was partly built out of the old railway station).

Following the path

The path is well signposted and picnic stops dot the route. The main villages on the trail are Crosby and St John's. The path allows for diversions off the route to see such sights as St Runius Church and Tynwald Hill in St John's.
