Hurtmore is a hamlet in south-western Surrey found roughly east of Shackleford, adjoining hilly developed parts of the outskirts of Godalming such as Charterhouse Hill and Prior's Field (which is part of the village of Compton). On Charterhouse Hill stands a well known public school, Charterhouse School.
The public house in the hamlet is The Squirrel, which stands beside the A3. The name of the pub is derived form the sign of a squirrel in a cage, which used to be the sign of a tinker.[1]
The name of the hamlet is derived from the word 'hart mere': the pond in question still exists in a rather poor state at Hurtmore Bottom.
Leisure and sport
- Badminton: Hurtmore Badminton Club
- Golf: An 18-hole golf course with clubhouse is just off the next to the pub,[2]
A hot air balloon provider, Reach 4 The Sky, operates flights from the land behind the pub cottages, historically used as a chalk quarry.[3]
