Hammer is a village in the very north of Sussex, sitting beside the border of Surrey to the north and close to the border of Hampshire to the west also. At its northern edge runs a stream on whose northern bank if Shottermill in Surrey.
Immediately to the east of Hammer is Camelsdale. To the south is Linchmere (to whose parish Hammer and Camelsdale are assigned).
Hammer took its name from an iron mill which was active there from before 1573 until at least 1730. There were also other iron works in the district including one partly in what is now Fernhurst parish, in Furnace Wood near Lower Lodge Farm, apparently started a little before 1620. The associated water supply is still named Furnace Pond and is just a mile and a half south of Linchmere village centre.[1]
Curches
The village has one church today:
- Independent / Evangelical: Three Counties Church
There was formerly a Church of England church also, St Michael's, which has since closed.[2]
