Gull Rock was roughly charted by the Argeintine Antarctic Expedition of 1946-47, and called Islote Gaviotín ('Tern Islet'). Following a survey by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey from Hope Bay in 1958-61, it was named 'Gull Rock', derived in error from the Spanish word gaviota ('gull').
