Great Bookham is a village in Surrey, found at the northern edge of the North Downs, which rise up towards Ranmore Common south of the village. Great Bookham is found located between Leatherhead and Guildford.
Great and Little Bookham together are known as The Bookhams, grown from the ancient village of Bookham. The village's name is from the Old English Bocham, meaning "beech-home".
The Bookhams are surrounded by common land. Great Bookham is the larger village but Little Bookham has the railway station. Both are on the A246 which is the main road between Leatherhead and Guildford. Having once separated into two distinct villages, the Bookhams have spread into one another through new residential roads reaching between, such that it appears all as one large village of Bookham.
Above Great Bookham is Polesden Lacey, a well known, beautiful county house located on the southern edge of the village, surrounded by over 1,000 acres of grounds, now owned by the National Trust and open to the public.
