Girthon is a parish in Kirkcudbrightshire, six miles north-west of Kirkcudbright. It contains the larger part of the burgh of Gatehouse of Fleet which has spread across the Water of Fleet into neighbouring Anwoth. This place, which is of great antiquity, is supposed to have derived its name, signifying, in the Celtic language, an inclosure or sanctuary. The parish is bounded by the bay and Water of Fleet on the south and west beyond which lie Anwoth, Kirkmabreck and Minnigaff. To the north lies Kells, while Balmaghie, Twynholm and Borgue are the neighbouring parishes to the east.

The A75 trunk road passes through the south of the parish close to sea level, whereas the level rises to the north. The largest peaks include: Shaw Hill (1,257 feet), Round Fell (1,319 feet), Craigwhinnie (1,368 feet), Fell of Fleet (1,542 feet) and Craigronald (1,683 feet). Lochs in this part of the parish include Loch Grannoch, Loch Skerrow and Loch Fleet.
