Japanese garden in Giggle Alley Woods

Giggle Alley is a woodland in Eskdale Green in the fells of Cumberland. It was formerly part of the Gate House estate and developed as a remarkable woodland garden at that time.

In 1914 a Japanese garden was created as part of the estate, the ruins of which may be visited today, still of interest and no little charm.[1] It was laid out by the team of Thomas Hayton Mawson.[2][3][4]

The house and estate were sold to the Outward Bound Trust in 1949. The woodland was then sold by Outward Bound to the Forestry Commission in the 1960s, the trust retaining th house and its grounds. Restoration efforts began in the 2000s.
