Gelston is a village in Kesteven, the south-western part of Lincolnshire, two miles west of the A607 road, five miles north of Kesteven's main town, Grantham, and a mile south-west of Hough-on-the-Hill, to whose parish it has been allotted.

The village is included in the ecclesiastical parish of Hough-on-the Hill, part of the Loveden Deanery of the Diocese of Lincoln.[1]

History

The name 'Gelston' may mean "Giofull's farmstead (or a village)", after an unknown Scadinavia landowner.[2]

Gelston appears in the 1086 Domesday Book as "Chevelestune"[3] in the manor of Hough-on-the-Hill, and in the Loveden Wapentake of Kesteven. It had 26 households, 18 villeins, 6 smallholders and 2 freemen, with 16 ploughlands, meadow of 146 acres and woodland of 200 acres. In 1066 Earl Ralph was Lord of the Manor but by 1086 this had been granted to Count Alan of Brittany, who also became Tenant-in-chief.[4]

In 1885 Kelly's Directory noted: "at Gelston there is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists; and an ancient cross".[5] The Wesleyan chapel was built in 1839, closed in 1958, and is now a private residence.[6]

The mediæval limestone cross on the village green dates from the 15th century, is Grade II listed and is a scheduled ancient monument.[7][8][9]
