Geldeston is a village in Norfolk, two and a half miles north-west of Beccles and 14.0 miles (22.5 km) south-east of Norwich, on the north bank of the River Waveney.

The name of the village is of Anglo-Saxon origin and derives from the Old English for Gyldi's farmstead or settlement.[1]

The 2021 census recorded Geldeston's population as 407.

History

Geldeston is not listed in the Domesday Book.

In Geldeston, close to the green, is a crinkle crankle wall; a design most commonly found in Suffolk.[2]

In 1777, Geldeston Hall was built as the home of the Kerrich family and it remained in the same family until 1930. Today, the hall is divided into several separate dwellings.[3]

St. Michael's Church

Geldeston's parish church, St Michael's, is one of Norfolk's 124 remaining round-tower churches. It is a Grade II listed building.[4] It stands outside of the village on Yarmouth Road.

The church dates from the twelfth century. It was significantly remodelled in the mid-nineteenth century based on the designs of Thomas Penrice and J. L. Clemence, with stained-glass depicting the Risen Christ installed by Leonard Walker in the mid-Twentieth Century.[5]

About the village

The village hall was originally opened in 1924. It underwent significant renovation from 2016 onwards and is now a registered charity.[6]
