Frizington is a village in western Cumberland, spread along the A5086 a mile north-east of Cleator Moor, and north of the River Ehen.

Historically the village was just a collection of farms and houses, but became a unified village as a result of the mining (both coal and iron ore) opportunities in the area. The village is known for its church, which was built in 1867-1868.

On 2 June 2010, Frizington, hitherto a quiet place, was uncomfortably in the news as the scene of the second murder in the infamous killing spree by Derrick Bird, when he shot his family solicitor, Kevin Commons.[1]

Name

The name of the village is said to mean 'Frisa's people's village', which may be interpreted as "village of Frisians".[2]
