Fretherne is a small village in Gloucestershire on the shore of the broad, tidal River Severn. It is found between the larger villages of Frampton-on-Severn and Arlingham. It forms the civil parish of Fretherne with Saul with the village of Saul.
In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor is recorded as held by Turstin FitzRolf. The owner before the Conquest has his name recorded as ‘Auti’.[1]
A public footpath 50 yards west of the church leads to Hock Cliff at the River Severn (at its widest pre-estuary point), which is popular with fossil hunters.
