Eskdale is the dale of the White Esk and subsequently the River Esk in Dumfriesshire, one of the county’s three great dales, east of Annandale. The White Esk rises in the Ettrick Hills at the northern edge of the county and carves Eskdale on its journey to its estuary on the Solway Firth.
The B709 follows the dale for much of the way down.
Eskdalemuir is a village midway down the dale, and lower down where the dale broadens is Langholm.
Miscellany
In 1620, when 13 continuous days of snow occurred in Galloway, on Eskdale Moor only 35 of a flock of 20,000 sheep survived.[1]
