Ebernoe Common

Ebernoe Common is a tract of wooded common land in northern Sussex, to the south of Ebernoe, west of Balls Cross and north of Petworth.

The woodland is managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust, and is maintained as a ‘national nature reserve’.[1]

Conservations

Of this common, 578 acres have been designated a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest.[2] It is also a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I,[3] a national nature reserve.[4] and a Special Area of Conservation.[5]

This site consists of several blocks of ancient woodland. It is nationally important for lichens, with over 100 species, and for fungi, with seven Red Data Book species. It is also nationally important for woodland breeding birds and for bats, especially barbastelles and Bechstein’s.[2]
