Drumsloe is a village and townland in the Barony of Tirkennedy just east of Ballinamallard township by Magheracross. The townland covers 241 acres.[1]

Sights about the village include Drumsloe Lough, where an illegal distillery on Drumsloe Island was operated for some time in the early 19th century.[2]

Drumsloe

History

Drumsloe is recorded from the reign of King James I, in 1609, when it was known as Dromslo. The name may be from Druim Sluagh meaning ridge of the hosts.[3]

The Griffith's Valuation of 1863 indicates a school was located in Drumsloe.

Church history and legend

Local legend has it that St Patrick himself founded Magheracross Parish in about the year 450, and that in about 550 St Columba passed through the area.

In 1769 John Wesley visited the district bringing Methodism and nearby Coa Chapel was built in 1770. In the early 20th century further religious movements swept the district.[4][5]
