Dovenby is a small village in Cumberland. It is on the A594 road, two and a half miles north-west of Cockermouth.
The village is bordered along its whole length by the parkland of the Dovenby Hall Estate, in the middle of which stands Dovenby Hall.
Name
The name 'Dovenby' is from the Norse or later Northumbrian English 'Dufan's bȳ' or 'Dufan's hamlet or village'. By is late Old English adoption from the Old Norse býr. The personal name 'Dufan' is believed to be of Irish origin; possibly from 'Dubhán', a diminutive of 'dubh', 'black', but such a name is on record from Iceland.[1]
