Crimplesham's name is of Anglo-Saxon origin and derives from the Old English for Crymple's homestead or farmstead.[1]

History

In the Domesday Book of 1086, Crimplesham is recorded as a settlement of 28 households and part of the estate of Reginald, son of Ivo. Additionally, the Domesday Book tells us that the landowner of Crimplesham in 1066 was a woman named Ælgyth.[2]

During the Nineteenth Century, Crimplesham Manor was owned by the Bagges, with Crimplesham Hall being remodelled in the 1880s by Alfred Waterhouse at the expense of John Grant Morris. Crimplesham Hall stills stands today and is Grade II listed.[3]

This village was a centre for Abolitionist Movement: records show how Elizabeth Doyle of Crimplesham Hall inviting freed slaves to Crimplesham to meet the local schoolchildren.

Part of the parish fell within the grounds of RAF Downham Market during the Second World War, which was used by Pathfinder Squadrons.[4]

St Mary's Church

Crimplesham's parish church, St Mary, dates from the twelfth century. St. Mary's is located on Church Road and has been Grade II listed since 1959.[5]

St. Mary's was further built throughout the Mediæval era with a major restoration in the Victorian era. The church boasts a surviving Mediæval rood screen.[6]
