Crean Lake
Crean Lake is a large lake on South Georgia, fund at 758 feet above sea level west of the Shackleton Valley in the Busen Region of the island.
The lake is named after Thomas Crean (1877-1938), Able Seaman on the National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-04; Petty Officer on the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-13; Second Officer of Endurance on the British Imperial Transantarctic Expedition of 1914-16 under Shackleton.
At the conclusion of the latter expedition, Crean took part in the gruelling sea crossing of the James Caird to South Georgia and the traverse of the island from Peggotty Bluff to Stromness. During that crossing of South Georgia, by Shackleton, Worsley and Crean, the group climbed towards the last pass above Stromness, where the unsuspecting Crean broke through a layer of snow and ice to plunge waist-deep into the icy waters of this lake.
