Cox Green is a village in County Durham, close to the City of Sunderland in the urbanised north-east of the county. It stands on the south bank of the River Wear, between Penshaw and Offerton.
In this tiny place, just 23 people were recorded as living in the village in 2010. There is a pub called the Oddfellows Arms.[1]
The village is linked to Washington Staithes on the north bank of the river, by the Cox Green Footbridge. It is primarily a residential village.
Name
Cox Green is from Old English; from cocc meaning either a cock or the crest of a hill. The name was recorded as Cosse in 1108, and Couuse in 1146 and Cokksgrene in 1248.
