Colburn is a village in Swaledale in the North Riding of Yorkshire. It stands approximately 2 miles west of Catterick on the Colburn Beck, just above where the Beck enters the woods and runs down to the Swale (which is less than quarter of a mile from Colburn). The village had a population of 3,606 in 2001.

Colburn properly speaking is small, ancient village here on the beck, a ring village with an ancient hall and a single pub. To the south though is a large, suburban housing estate on the A6136 Colburn Lane. It dwarfs Old Colburn and known as the Colburn Lane Estate, though it often arrogates the ancient name to itself.

The village takes its name from the first settlers along the stream Colburn Beck, once known as the Cold Burn, so the name means "cold stream".

Surrounding areas of Colburn include Walkerville, the Broadway Shops and Richmondshire Walk.

A Sports and Recreation centre opened in 2004 gives the people of Colburn a place to relax, exercise, and play a number of sports, including football.

Of late Colburn has been at the centre of fierce local controversy over plans by the council to build new offices for itself on a business park developed by the council but which has stood empty for a number of years. The new offices are budgeted to cost 4 times the value of the existing council offices so the council are to build flats in town centre car parks in nearby historic Richmond to fund the move.[1]

In 2007 the Colburn Lane Estate celebrated its 50 years, and it held a number of events to celebrate that, from pantomime to quiz nights.

Church

Colburn lies within the parish of Hipswell and is served by St Cuthbert's Church on Colburn Lane, Colburn.
