The Cloghoge River, County Wicklow

The Cloghoge River is a little river in the Wicklow Mountains, carving an exquisite valley, the Cloghoge Valley, on its course. The valley has been described as Wicklow's most beautiful entirely private valley, as it is wholly within the Luggala Estate (known locally too as the Guinness Estate).[1] Its course is all within County Wicklow.

The source of the Cloghoge River is on the slopes of Djouce Mountain (close to the source of the River Dargle). From here it flows south to Lough Tay, whence it emerges again to continue south.

The Cloghoge flows down its beautiful valley from Lough Tay until it enters Lough Dan; the latter the largest natural lake in Wicklow. The outflow from Lough Dan is the River Avonmore.

Walkers are permitted to follow the valley through the Estate from the entrance as far as Lough Dan.

The valley has been described as "the largest example of a fossilised 18th/19th-Century farming landscape in Wicklow, if not the country".[2]
