Clayholes is a small hamlet in Angus, half a mile north of Carnoustie on the unclassified Balmachie road, a lane which connects the A930 road in Carnoustie with the A92 at Balmachie.

The village does not appear on the earliest detailed maps available for the area, but can be seen on Ainslie's map of 1794.[1]

The site, however, is not new to the tread of men's feet – it appears to have been settled in pre-modern times, as evidenced by archaeology found in the immediate vicinity.[2]
