Charles is a tiny village in northern Devon, eight miles east of Barnstaple. The village is clustered around a meeting of lanes and its parish church, all above the steep valley of the River Bray, a tributary of the Taw.
The church, St John the Baptist, was built to replace the old chapel on the site that was dedicated to St Petrock. It has a tower and chancel nave which probably date to the fifteenth century, though the tower was largely rebuilt in 1620. The whole of the church was restored in 1881.
