Carleton St Peter is a tiny village in Norfolk approximately eight and a half miles south-east of Norwich. There is no village centre as such but the parish church, St Peter's, provides a core position,
The village is a mile north-east of Thurton, and a similar distance south of Claxton, just east of Ashby St Mary.
In the 2001 Carleton St Peter was recorded as containing just 15 households and a population of 29 spread across the square mile of the parish.[1]
Parish church
The parish church is St Peter's. It cannot be reached by road but stands surrounded by its churchyard in the middle of a field reached by a short path between ploughed fields.[2]
The tower contains four bells but they cannot be rung.
About the village
The parish extends northwards to the south bank of the River Yare, and includes the Beauchamp Arms public house on river bank and the nearby Buckenham Sailing Club: both are found at the end of Ferry Road. There was once a ferry crossing to Buckenham on the north bank, but this stopped before Second World War.
Between Carleton St Peter and Claxton, on the banks of Carleton Beck, lies Ducan's Marsh, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of the richest areas of unimproved wet grassland in eastern Norfolk.[3]
