Broadholme is a village in Nottinghamshire, hard by the border with Lincolnshire. It is half a mile south of the village of Saxilby in the latter county and of the A157 road, in a small extrusion of Nottinghamshire almost surrounded by its neighbour. The 2001 census recorded a population of 88.
History
A Premonstratensian monastery, Broadholme Priory, was founded adjacent to the village at some time after 1154.[1] The priory was one of only two female priories of that order in England (the other being Orford Priory).
The priory was dissolved in 1536 as part of King Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries.[2] The site is currently occupied by Manor Farm, which may incorporate part of the former monastic buildings, although none are visible.[1]
The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales (1870–72) recorded parish as containing 550 acres and the village as having a population of 115, spread across 22 houses.[3]
