Part of Berriedale Wood

Berriedale Wood is a small woodland in the north of the island of Hoy in Orkney. It is considered to be the northernmost (semi) natural woodland in the British Isles.

The wood is part of an RSPB reserve. It survived serious damage following a devastating fire on the island, continuing a woodland that is believed to date back thousands of years before the arrival of mankind on the isles.[1]

The woodland is in the valley of the Burn of Berriedale, a mile north of Rackwick.

The woodland is composed of downy birch (Betula pubescens), with aspen (Populus tremula), hazel (Corylus avellana), rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) and willow (Salix spp), with an understorey of heather, roses, honeysuckle, ferns and blueberry.[2]
