Belluton is a village in the north of Somerset, due south of the city of Bristol and due west of Bath. The eastern end of the village is defined by the A37 road.

It is close to the route of the ancient Wansdyke.

Name

The original of the village's name is unknown and this has led to wild speculation. In the Domesday Book of 1086, the name is given as Beletone and as Belgetone. In more recent times the name has appeared as the commonplace "Belton".

Some antiquaries have insisted that the name of the village was "Baal town," or "the Town of the Sun"[1] (assuming presumably some passing Syrian or Carthaginian settlers to give such a name). Robinson claimed that it was called Belgetona in the Domesday Book indicated a town of the ancient Belgae tribe whom the Romans encountered.[2] It woyuod be more romantic than suggesting that it is form an ordinary Old English word such as belg for "bulge" or "bag" in reference to the bulge in the River Chew here.

Buildings

John Locke lived in Belluton during his childhood. His father was a small landowner and attorney at the local village of Pensford. John Locke's Cottage is now a Grade II listed building.[3]

Other Grade II listed buildings include Belluton House, from the early 19th century,[4] and The Grange from the 18th century.[5]
