Bal-Mawr is a subsidiary top of Chwarel y Fan, found to the south-east along the Bwlch Isaf Ridge. The ridge itself forms the boundary between Monmouthshire proper and the Fwthog detached part of Herefordshire to the west. The summit therefore is in both counties.
The Cambrian Way long-distance footpath passes along the ridge and across the summit of Bal-Mawr. The trig point on Bal-Mawr has an interesting plaque dating from the Ordnance Survey "adopt a trig point scheme" and bearing the message "On all the peaks lies peace. Goethe". This is perhaps a message for those who opposed the Cambrian Way on the basis that it should not go over mountain tops!
