Ackenthwaite is a hamlet in Westmorland, half a mile north of Milnthorpe.
This is a little place: a postbox, a telephone box a few farms, a small farmers' pub and a few dependent buildings. The "old workhouse" in Ackerthwaite was originally a workhouse, then a mental institution and then was a storage warehouse. It was then converted into flats and now stands as five houses. Built up around the old workhouse is the estate of Owlet Ash.
Ackenthwaite was the location for Libby's which is an old factory for Nestlé. There is now a small industrial estate on the site.
Traditions
An annual tradition of Ackerthwaite is a New Year's feast. Local folk celebrate the new year by standing in Chelsea Court (a cul-de-sac) in coats and have a barbecue. There is frequently merry Scottish dancing.
At Christmas the locals often drink a form of alcoholic eggnog, which they call 'noggy-no-good'.
