Brougham Castle

Brougham Castle is a mediæval castle in northern Westmorland, about two miles south-east of Penrith (across in Cumberland). The castle stands in ruin where the River Lowther joins the Eamont. It was founded by Robert de Vieuxpont in the early 13th century, but the site is much older: on the same strategic site the Romans built a fort called Brocavum.

The castle and Roman remains are together a scheduled Ancient Monument. (Read more)
